aiomics Award 2027

Research that strengthens clinical judgement.

AI is becoming part of everyday medicine. Its value depends on how clinicians assess the evidence, recognise its limits and use it in the care of patients. The aiomics Award recognises research that helps them do this well.

Announced now. Applications open 1 September 2027.

The prizes recognise the submitted research and its author team. Entry is free. All career stages and nationalities are welcome.

More capacity for the work that needs a clinician.

Good medicine needs knowledge, attention and sound judgement. Clinical AI should be examined against those needs: does it reduce avoidable work, support decisions people can explain, and leave healthcare professionals able to care for their patients?

We are interested in the conditions that make an approach useful in practice, including the work it adds, the errors it introduces and the people it affects. Findings of limited benefit or harm are equally eligible. The research can concern any AI system; use of aiomics is not required.

Three questions for clinical practice

Choose the theme that best describes your paper. Interdisciplinary work can address more than one theme and is entered once.

Better work. More capacity for care.

What changes when AI enters a clinical workflow?

Research on operational improvements and staff workload, including whether time saved becomes usable clinical capacity. We welcome studies that examine quality, staff experience, implementation effort and economic consequences alongside efficiency.

Examples: documentation, handovers, referrals, resource planning and coordination across teams.

Clinical judgement in collaboration with AI.

How do clinicians understand, question and use AI?

Research on the physician’s role, responsibility, competence and collaboration with AI. Relevant outcomes include error detection, appropriate reliance, decision quality, learning and the ability to explain a decision to a patient.

Examples: automation bias, human oversight, AI literacy, team decisions and professional accountability.

Evidence for benefits, harms and limits.

What evidence supports a decision to use AI?

Research that evaluates clinical AI against a meaningful comparator and makes its limitations visible. We welcome work on safety, equity, external validation, cost-effectiveness and monitoring after implementation.

Examples: prospective evaluation, subgroup effects, failure modes, evaluation methods and real-world implementation.

Two prizes across all three themes

Who and what can enter

A researcher at a European institution

The submitting author must have an active affiliation with an eligible European university, hospital or research institution when applying. Co-authors can be based anywhere. The country list is included below.

A published or finally accepted journal paper

Papers first published on or after 1 July 2026 qualify. An unpublished paper qualifies if final acceptance after peer review is dated between 1 July 2026 and the application deadline. A submission or request for revision is insufficient.

Journal Impact Factor of at least 2.0

Use the journal’s standard two-year Journal Impact Factor in the latest Clarivate Journal Citation Reports edition available on 1 September 2027. Supply the value, edition year and source. This is an eligibility threshold; it adds no points to the scientific score.

A clear connection to one of the three themes

Original empirical research, evaluation or methods research with a clear clinical application, and systematic reviews or meta-analyses are eligible. The paper must help assess or implement AI in healthcare.

Time to do the research properly

What the jury will assess

Five external jurors will bring clinical, methodological, implementation and ethical perspectives. Each eligible paper will receive at least three independent assessments. The jury will be announced before applications open.

35/ 100

Scientific rigour

Appropriate design, analysis, comparators and conclusions; uncertainty and limitations addressed.

25/ 100

Relevance to clinical practice

A meaningful question for patients, clinicians or healthcare institutions, with outcomes suited to that question.

15/ 100

Professional judgement and human factors

Attention to responsibility, usable oversight, team performance or the human consequences of implementation.

15/ 100

Transferability and practical value

A clear account of where the findings may apply, what implementation requires and what remains untested.

10/ 100

Transparency and responsible research

Traceable methods, declared interests, ethical conduct and proportionate reporting of benefits and harms.

Assessment is relative to the study’s question and design. Journal prestige, citation counts, commercial potential and favourable findings do not earn additional points. The sponsor has no vote.

  6. Submitting author’s name, email, institution, country and contribution; ORCID if available.
  7. Confirmation that the co-authors agree to the entry, and declarations of funding, competing interests and relevant research approvals.

Application statements may be submitted in English or German. Include an English abstract for a paper written in another language. Do not submit identifiable patient information.

Full participation rules

2027 edition · Rules published November 2026

Dates and publication status

The deadline is 1 December 2027 at 23:59 CET (Europe/Berlin). A published paper is eligible if its first journal publication, including online-first publication, is dated from 1 July 2026 through the deadline. An earlier acceptance date does not exclude a paper first published within that period. An unpublished paper must have final acceptance after peer review dated from 1 July 2026 through the deadline. A later print issue does not make an older online-first paper eligible. Preprints, conference proceedings, abstracts, protocols, editorials, narrative opinion articles and papers still under revision are excluded. No result or publication after the deadline is needed to make a complete, already accepted entry eligible.

Journal requirement

The journal must have a standard two-year Clarivate Journal Impact Factor of at least 2.0 in the latest Journal Citation Reports edition available on 1 September 2027. The reported value is used without additional rounding. CiteScore, the five-year impact factor and unofficial impact metrics do not substitute for it. A journal without a qualifying value in that edition is ineligible. The organiser will verify the evidence; the journal metric is not used to rank papers.

Researchers, teams and institutions

The applicant must be a named author with an active research, clinical, teaching or student affiliation at an institution in an eligible country at the time of application. Universities, hospitals and public or private research institutions qualify. Nationality, age, seniority and professional qualification do not restrict entry. International co-authors are welcome. Research conducted elsewhere can qualify when the submitting author meets the affiliation rule and explains its relevance to European clinical practice. One author applies on behalf of the team, with the co-authors’ agreement. One entry per paper; an author may enter more than one distinct paper.

European eligibility

Eligible institutional countries are Albania, Andorra, Armenia, Austria, Azerbaijan, Belarus, Belgium, Bosnia and Herzegovina, Bulgaria, Croatia, Cyprus, Czechia, Denmark, Estonia, Finland, France, Georgia, Germany, Greece, Hungary, Iceland, Ireland, Italy, Kosovo, Latvia, Liechtenstein, Lithuania, Luxembourg, Malta, Moldova, Monaco, Montenegro, the Netherlands, North Macedonia, Norway, Poland, Portugal, Romania, Russia, San Marino, Serbia, Slovakia, Slovenia, Spain, Sweden, Switzerland, Türkiye, Ukraine, the United Kingdom and Vatican City. Eligibility is based on the institution’s location, rather than the author’s nationality.

Themes and eligible findings

The work must substantially concern AI in healthcare and at least one of the three published themes. Original quantitative, qualitative or mixed-method research, clinically relevant evaluation and methods research, systematic reviews and meta-analyses can qualify. Select one primary theme and identify any overlap. Papers showing no benefit, unexpected burden or harm are welcome. Previous recognition by another award does not exclude a paper.

Independence and competing interests

Aiomics funds and administers the award. Five external jurors make the scientific decision; aiomics representatives have no vote. Jurors declare relevant financial, professional and personal interests and take no part in assessing a conflicted paper. Recent co-authorship, direct supervision, work at the same institution and paid collaboration are reviewed as potential conflicts. A conflicted reviewer is replaced so that each paper retains at least three independent assessments. Papers authored by a juror, current aiomics employees or contractors, commissioned by aiomics, or evaluating an aiomics product are excluded from this edition.

Selection and prizes

The organiser first checks eligibility and completeness. Jurors independently score each eligible paper against the five weighted criteria, then agree the final ranking. Scientific rigour, followed by clinical relevance, resolves an otherwise equal ranking. First prize is €1,000 and second prize is €500 across all themes combined. A paper can receive one prize. Payment is made once to the team’s agreed recipient, an individual author or institution. Jurors may withhold a prize if no submission meets an adequate scientific standard; any such decision will be explained. Winning papers and short reasons for the decisions will be published.

Research integrity and corrections

Applicants must declare funding and competing interests and confirm that required ethics approvals and permissions were obtained. Retractions, acceptance withdrawals or material corrections must be reported promptly, including after submission. A retracted paper or withdrawn journal acceptance is ineligible. The organiser may request supporting evidence and exclude an entry for material misrepresentation. Eligibility evidence can be clarified after the deadline; a new paper, new acceptance or substantive new application cannot be added.

Rights and confidentiality

Authors retain their rights. The organiser and jury receive permission to access the submitted material only for administration and assessment. Unpublished manuscripts will not be placed on the public website. Publication of a shortlist, an author interview or a longer research summary requires the relevant authors’ agreement. Winners agree to publication of their names, institutions, paper citation and the jury’s short explanation. No product purchase, newsletter subscription, public endorsement or link from an applicant’s institution is required.

Administration and data

The organiser is aiomics GmbH, Berlin. Application data will be used to administer and assess the award and to contact applicants. Submission-specific privacy information, secure upload details and the application form will be published before 1 September 2027. Requests for general company information remain separate from an award entry. Material changes to the published rules will be dated and explained; submitted entries will not be disadvantaged by retrospective criteria changes. Questions can be sent through the contact page with the subject aiomics Award.

Common questions

Can I submit a paper that has been accepted but is not published?

Yes. Final acceptance following peer review must be dated between 1 July 2026 and 1 December 2027. Include the accepted manuscript and the journal’s acceptance notice. The journal must meet the impact-factor requirement.

Can I apply now?

Applications open on 1 September 2027. You can save the dates and prepare your material now. The award is already available for announcement and listing.

Does every theme have two prizes?

There are two prizes in total across all three themes: €1,000 and €500.

Must the paper show that AI works?

No. A rigorous finding of no benefit, additional workload or harm is equally eligible. The jury evaluates the evidence and what it means for practice.

Do I need to be a physician or an aiomics customer?

No. Researchers from relevant disciplines and all career stages are welcome when they meet the institutional and publication requirements. Participation is free and independent of any commercial relationship.

Who is on the jury?

The five external jurors will be announced by 31 August 2027, before applications open. Their expertise and declarations of interests will be published with their names.

Why aiomics supports this research

Hospital teams spend time finding records, chasing missing reports and coordinating work across people and systems. Aiomics helps them organise patient cases and projects: responsibilities, tasks, deadlines, communication, progress, documents and resource planning come together. Source review and the preparation of letters and reports support this coordinated work. The aim is to give healthcare professionals more time for patients and help protect the financial health of their institutions.

The award extends that purpose into research. It asks what enables clinicians to work competently with AI, exercise informed judgement and sustain good care in everyday practice. Funding the award does not establish clinical validation of aiomics or an endorsement by applicants, jurors or listing organisations.
